Thanksgiving is a holiday where family and friends can come together to hold hands and give thanks to those who support them or for the life around them. The first Thanksgiving took place in 1621 over a three-day harvest festival. Abraham Lincoln later made Thanksgiving an official holiday on October 3rd, 1863. For Native Americans this is a day of quiet and prayer for the land that was stolen from them.
Everyone has different plans for this holiday, here’s what some Pitman staff and students have planned!
“What are your plans for Thanksgiving?”
Mr. Hatchel (Pitman High School English teacher) – “My family is coming from all over California, about 18-20 people. We’re going to play games, eat dinner, relax, and hang out.”
Mrs. Zaharris (Pitman High School Art Teacher) – “Oh heck yeah! Rest, kick my feet up, and hang out with family and friends.
Adriana Miguel (Freshman at Pitman High School) – “So the day before Thanksgiving, I go with my dad’s side of the family and we do this activity, which is like an easter egg hunt, but it’s a turkey with money inside. Since there are a lot of kids on this side of the family, it is a fun activity. The actual day of Thanksgiving, I go with my mom’s side of the family, and we have a Thanksgiving breakfast with everyone and just do the usual Thanksgiving activities.”
“Are you looking forward to it?”
Mr. Hatchel – “Absolutely!”
Mrs Zaharris – “Oh yeah, for sure!”
Adriana Miguel – “Yeah definitely because I get to see my dad’s side of the family since I don’t get to see those cousins as much, and it’s going to be very fun and activity-filled.”
It seems as though most people will have fun and enjoy their time off for the holiday week, and most will spend this time with family and friends.
Thanksgiving is a time where you give prayers to God and enjoy the life that he has provided for us. Most see this holiday as just an excuse to eat and hang out, and while that is a part of the holiday, it is not the most important part of it. We should always be grateful, appreciative, and understanding of our situation in life because we never know what is planned ahead for us.
For some, this Thanksgiving might be just chilled, relaxed, and laid back, but for others, it’s a big major event. What will you be doing for Thanksgiving this year, will you be chilling’ all alone, or celebrating with friends, family, and food?
