Powder Puff is an exclusive and exciting tradition commonly found in American High Schools. It involves female students/athletes playing flag football. Meanwhile the male students on the sideline participated as cheerleaders. It’s an engaging and spirited way for students to get involved in their school activities. Would you ever be interested to join? Don’t hold back!
Powder Puff originated from 1940’s football. The first known game was October 20, 1945. It was held at Eastern State Teachers College. It was given the exquisite name “Powder Puff” from the soft, fluffy applicator used for face or setting powders. It symbolized the comical and non-serious nature. Over time, some assets have been changed, but overall has the same core idea; allowing female students to showcase their athletic abilities through a sport typically dominated by male athletes.
Pitman Highs Powder Puff was held on November 24, 2024 at the Pitman High Football Field. There were 4 quarters that all lasted 15 minutes each, like typical football. The rival teams playing against each other were the Pitman High Class of 2025 (seniors) against Class of 2026 (juniors). Through an intense game of back and forth, the juniors ultimately came out on top with an impressive score 0-18.
One of the most remarkable moments was during halftime while the cheerleaders performed. It was a funny and wholesome experience to watch our boys show off their cheer moves. Especially with the silly commentary coming from Joshua Abadi and Ryan Njock. We send thanks to the Pitman Staff who supplied trophies and chains to the players and cheerleaders.
Through the chilly night, it was nice to see all the students, parents, and staff who came to support. The posters and cheers really set the mood, allowing everyone to feel the high school experience. As well as we let Pitman football players coach their teams. All athletes, cheerleaders, and coaches did a great job. The overall teamwork and dedication put into this game shines more than anything. These girls learned how to play football in such a short time, and definitely showed what they knew.
We hope everyone enjoyed watching this event as much as we did. We love to showcase our school spirit through many ways, and this one remains a unique tradition. We hope to grow and advance to continue hosting powder puff. Maybe we’ll see you playing next year! Who do you think will win?
