On October 1st of 2024 a vice presidential debate between JD Vance, representative of the Republican party and Tim Walz, representative of the Democratic party occurred in New York. This debate differed from a regular vice presidential debate in ways that surprised the audience.
Vice presidential debates typically have no effect on the presidential election but instead are more focused on introducing themselves to the country. During the debate both vice presidents remained civil and surprisingly fixated on current policy issues. Both candidates held back from throwing personal attacks and instead threw attacking shots at each other’s Presidential nominee.
What’s even more surprising to the audience is the occasional agreements that were made between the two vice presidents during the debate. This created a respectable image for both candidates.
Recently JD Vance created a negative perception upon himself due to the conspiracies of the Ohio Haitian immigrants and his statement, “Childless Cat Ladies” but his appearance during the debate drastically improved his image. During the debate he remained calm, prepared, rational, and agreeable. He delivered his main points and statements smoothly.
On the other hand Tim Walz had a rough entrance. He seemed nervous and unprepared. In the beginning of the debate he mispoked and paused frequently. However as the debate continued he heavily strengthened his appearance by speaking effectively on topics that are not typically the strongest within the Democratic party.
Throughout the debate both candidates exchanged and discussed their plans and policies of resolving significant issues of abortion, climate change, immigration, and international conflict. Both candidates expressed their strength and confidence on certain topics. JD Vance was influential in topics of immigration, the economy, and foreign policies, still staying defensive of his stance on abortion while sounding reasonable. Tim Walz was strongly persuasive in topics of gun safety, health care, and housing.
During the debate both candidates blamed the opposing Presidential nominee on the issue of immigration. Similarly, both candidates ignored questions of controversial subjects and steered away from them. Neither candidate answered whether they approved of a preemptive strike by Israel on Iran.
A senior at Pitman High School gave his opinion on the vice presidential debate.
“I think it is quite intense and JD Vance is a very strong opponent. I side with JD Vance.”
Stated from a member of the Turlock community. “I have been watching this since the 70’s and nothing has gotten better or changed. People’s wages haven’t gone up considering inflation. Scientists agree with the government about climate change for the grant money.”
With both candidates making occasional agreements and promising strong leadership while still exchanging heated attacks, we can note how this debate may or may not potentially have an effect on the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. However this debate will surely affect the future of both vice presidents.
