You may have seen the numerous posts regarding the Timothée Chalamet lookalike contest, but do you know what actually took place?
The contest was set for Sunday, October 27th, at 1 p.m.. The various posters were seen all over Manhattan, and it was to be held in Washington Square Park. Lots of people thought this was a joke, but when lookalikes really did show up, their views changed.
Youtuber Anthony Po organized the contest, and was offering a $50 reward to the most similar contestant. Throughout the day, tons of people crowded in in the hopes of finding love (why I would go if I was in NYC), winning the prize, seeing the real Timothée, or just for jokes.
The YouTuber was also fined $500 for hosting the “unpermitted costume contest” but stated in a recent interview he has no regrets.
The posts around the contest circulated the web, as people thought it was hilarious. We see that social media has a big effect on real life events, such as the huge “Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us” raid, which was in late 2019.
It’s not a surprise to anyone that the real Timothée Chalamet showed up, not only because he’s very in tune with the media and what’s popular amongst the fans, but he was already in NYC filming “Marty Supreme”.
Throughout the day, we watched many events unfold. One event was a contestant getting arrested. In videos posted by people attending the contest, you can hear them shouting “Free Timmy!” Or things along those lines.
It’s not officially confirmed why Matt Mannix, the guy who was arrested, was taken into custody, but it is NYC, so even the most far fetched reasons could be reality. The main story going around is that he was in a heated argument with the cops, and that the NYPD arrests people for the littlest of issues.
It was terrible timing, how the whole thing played out. Matt Mannix was being taken away at pretty much the exact same time when the real Timothée showed up.
The winner, 21 year old Miles Mitchell, appeared in full Wonka gear, which might be why he won. A lot of the fans thought he didn’t look like him at all, but in the end it’s all fun and games so it doesn’t really matter too much.
Another thing we saw coming out of this event was the Saturday Night skit, this past Saturday on November 2nd. Timothée is no stranger to SNL, as he has hosted it twice before, and he’s had quite a few skits made about him.
In the skit, we can see they’re in the NYC subway with various characters he has played or just the kind of things he’s been seen wearing, and they’re singing a song about how you too can look like him.
SNL always has really funny skits, and I think this was the perfect addition to the episode.
Overall, the lookalike event was really funny and entertaining to see. Being in NYC for this would be a surreal experience, regardless of if the real Timothée made an appearance.
If it wasn’t for the crazy people, rodents, and extremely high rent cost, New York City would be a dream to live in as there’s constantly something new going on.
It’s now a very big ongoing joke on TikTok, instagram, and other social media platforms. Because the real actor showed up, people are posting things like: “*their celebrity crush* Look alike contest! Location: my bedroom” or funny things like that. I really like Gen Z’s humor and I think this shows how unserious we are as a whole.
I interviewed Emily Calles, a junior at Pitman High, for her view on the contest.
I also interviewed Natalia Yepez, a sophomore at Pitman High, for her opinion.
Q: Would you say the winner of the contest holds a strong resemblance to the real actor?
A: No, his face structure is not the same and he’s kind of chubby and his nose is very different.
A: No, the lookalike’s eyebrows are too thick and the whole face shape is completely different.
Q: Do you think more events like this should be held often?
A: No, it’s pointless. If you want to go for fun it’d definitely be a good distraction, but overall it doesn’t bring anything to the table. Maybe if money went to help clean the dirty city it would be good, but otherwise no.
A: Yes, more events like that should be held because it’d be fun to see all the twinsies!
Q: If you were in NYC at the time of the contest, would you have gone?
A: Yes, Timothée Chalamet is really hot so I would’ve liked to see him.
A: No, I probably wouldn’t have gone because I don’t really like him.
