In media or even real life it is a constant running joke to say, “I am [insert hero]” and this phrase is more commonly used among the beloved heroes, Spider-Man and Batman.
The World’s Greatest Detective, the Dark Knight of Gotham infamous for his brutal nature. Spider-Man, a webslinger who’s a part-time loser, part-time photographer, and full-time superhero.
Batman is not only a complex hero but also a complex character as a whole. He is simultaneously a symbol of hope and fear. His inner demons shape his character, by how he deals with them and how this affects the people around him.
He’s not a set “good guy” he has his own set of morals that he sticks to (sometimes) even at the expense of his loved ones. His civilian identity, Bruce Wayne, is his alter ego, not the other way around.
He’s flawed which makes him,
Oh yeah, and he’s rich.
The reason I believe people love Spider-Man so much is because he’s portrayed as such an accessible person. He’s relatable and awkward. Peter also faces real-life struggles such as being broke 24/7, homework (depending on which version you read/watch), not-so-great social life at school, and bullies.
It makes him feel real, that he’s not above anyone, he’s just some regular guy going through life. His banter with criminals makes him less boring and gives him a strong personality.
Why do people love them so much? Why are they pitted against each other? And the most important question… “Who’s better?”
Spider-Man.
The answer is Spider-Man. (I’m totally not biased)
ANYWAYS! I’m here to find out the answer to these questions!
I sent my little minions to spread my survey that asked the basic questions: who did they think was better and why? I got a whopping total of 19 responses!
(12/19) 63.2% favor Batman.
(7/19) 36.8% favor Spider-Man.
In the survey I gave people the chance to explain anonymously why they think their favorite is better. Now what are their reasons?
One anonymous person gave a list of reasons “1. Spider-Man isn’t emo 2. He has powers. 3. He has friends. 4. The actors from Spiderman are 10x better looking. ESPECIALLY the first one (Tobey Maguire).”
It’s very clear whose side they’re on.
Actually, I’ve seen a trend of those who favor Spider-Man. Most of the time they mention his looks.
“all the spidermans were hot and the batmans can’t compete w them”
“Spiderman is hotter”
Some people just voted Batman because they didn’t like the actor of Spider-Man.
“I just hate Tom Holland tbh.”
“Tom Holland sucks.”
Poor Tom, already catching strays.
Here are some other odd responses.
“Because… I am Batman.”
“Edward is hot.”
“He just is.”
“Because.”
“Spooderman.”
The results shocked me (speaking as a Spider-Man glazer). I thought that Spider-Man would’ve had more fans because of all the hype backing the Spider-Verse movies and the greatness of Andrew Garfield.
At the end of the day, my glorious king Peter Parker couldn’t beat The Dark Knight as his gothness runs too deep into the closeted emo community which is 80% of the human population— a rough estimate by the number of people who say, “I am Batman.”
