On October 19th, 2024, at a local Walmart grocery store in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a 19-year-old female employee was found burnt to death by her co-worker. That co-worker happened to be her mother, a traumatizing sight for a parent.
About Gursiman Kaur
Kaur lived in Punjab’s Ludhiana with her family and then moved to the United Kingdom. In 2021, however, she moved from the United Kingdom to Canada with her mother while her father and brother still lived in India. In 2022 they were employed at a Walmart located in Halifax.
How was she discovered?
The girl’s mother stated that she was beginning to get concerned about Gursiman after she wasn’t answering her phone at work. The other employees assured her she was probably just busy working.
After one of the workers reported some sort of leakage coming from the oven, her mother opened it and found Kaur’s body in the oven. Everyone in the store was quickly ushered out and police rushed to the scene.
Ever since the horrifying discovery, the store has been shut down for further investigation.
How did she die?
“We urge the public to be mindful of sharing speculative information on social media,”
The police say. But it is a little too late for that, as this tragedy has blown up with theories and speculations of how this all went down. After all, investigators still have not confirmed how this even happened.
One of the most prominent speculations is that Gursiman Kaur was locked inside the oven by someone else, and then the oven was then turned on. A tik-toker posted on their account about how the oven actually works and how it only turns on from the outside, along with that they explained that the oven door is difficult to close.
Some people believe that her death was not just an accident, and instead a cold-blooded murder.
People Speak Up
Allison Ochoa, a freshman student at Pitman High School was willing to voice her opinion and thoughts on the tragic news.
“When I learned about that I was crying like I felt her pain.” Allison says, “I think she thought there was food and walked in. It was probably an accident.”
As well, Ashleen Baynes, a freshman student at Pitman High School was interviewed on the situation after learning about it.
“I was shocked that happened,” Ashleen says, “I think she was murdered. I think she was locked in there.”
This shows that there were many opinions of what happened and many different reactions. Although this girl might not have been well known, nor the Walmart she worked at, people have still come together and supported the family. In fact, people raised over $100,000 for her family.
To this day, the store is still closed to customers for the police to investigate. Nothing has been confirmed of her death.
