Teacher Spotlight – Mr. Fisher

Joshua Elwess (12th), Reporter

Mr. Fisher is a Math 2 Honors and AP Calculus AB teacher here at Pitman High School. I asked him a few questions about himself.

What made you want to become a math teacher?

I like seeing students understand how to solve something they thought they could not do. And I used to think I was good at math.

Why do you teach calculus?

The opportunity to teach calculus was given to me and scared me, but I decided to accept the challenge and it put pressure on me as a teacher which keeps me learning.

Did you want to be a teacher when you were younger?

No. I was scared to death of standing in front of people and talking.

How long have you been a teacher?

20 years.

Where did you go to high school and college?

High school at Hughson High School and college at Stan State.

Anything you struggle with as a teacher?

I struggle with staying positive when what I did did not seem like it worked.

What are your hobbies?

I like to read, do some simple woodworking, hiking, and spending time with my wife.

Any plans for Winter break?

When we get to the point where we can afford to do things, we have family in Oregon and Texas and we would like to spend time with them.

Do you have pets?

16 cats.

I enjoyed interviewing Mr. Fisher.
