Some Fun Study Tips!

Nobody likes taking tests. No one really likes to study, especially when it’s a subject they don’t like. But studying is important, especially in college. Therefore it is good to start studying effectively now in high school, rather than being sorry about not learning how to study later in college.

Here are some great tips on how to study effectively!:

  • Reviewing your Notes
    • One of the most effective and most recommended tips on studying is reviewing your notes.
    • After class, or when you get home from school, take out the notes you wrote in class and read them.
  • Find A Good Study Environment
    • Have a nice study spot. Find a place in your house where you can concentrate and focus on your work.
    • The study spot does not have to be in your own home. You can study at the library or a cafe like Starbucks.
    • However, do not study on your bed! When you study on your bed, it is tempting to fall asleep or you can get too comfy and it gets hard to focus.
  • Time Management
    • This is a great way to keep things organized and stay on track.
    • Make a study schedule. Keep track of test days and deadlines. Write them down. Also write down what subjects you should study and when to study them.
    • Determine when to take breaks as well. Like if you study for forty-five minutes, take a ten or fifteen minute break. Or if you studied for two hours, take a one hour break. Make the time even.
    • Follow the schedule you made, but make changes if needed.

  • Practice on old quizzes– whenever you get a old quiz back, look back on the questions that are incorrect and do them again. You can ask the teacher or the people around you what the correct answer is and try to figure out how to get to that answer. Some of those questions might be on tests and final exams so it’s helpful to look back on them.

  • PPR Method– Preview, practice, and Review
    • Preview- Skim through the lesson and what’s it going to focus on
    • Practice- After you have actually learned the lesson in class, practice the problems or memorize what you need to learn
    • Review- Go over what you learned. Everyday for five to ten minutes take some time to review what you learned and what you practiced. This method can be helpful and can be used in a daily study routine
  • Be Positive!– Overall, be positive about whatever you are working on. Instead of being negative, say positive things like “I CAN DO IT!” or “I GOT THIS!” Instead of complaining, just smile and think about why you are doing this! What is your dream job? Think what motivates you the most!

  • Reward Yourself!– Have something to look forward to after you study, it’s a great motivation. Tell yourself you’re going to watch your favorite TV show after you finish and understand these set of math problems, or talk to a friend, or give yourself some ice cream. You’ll feel good when you’ve finished your homework or studied.

Remember you don’t have to follow every single one of these steps, find your own way to study. Does music help you study? If it does, then do it! If it doesn’t, then don’t. Find what method works best for you! Every student knows studying can be a pain, but it’s all worth it at the end!
