Reflecting On Madden

Adrian Rodriguez (12th), Reporter

Ever since its first creation in 1988, John Madden football video games have a huge hit every year. First coming out for computers that ran MS-DOS, Madden soon came out for consoles, such as the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. Now, it can be bought for PCs, and latest consoles such as PS4 and Xbox One.

Just as any other title that has sequels coming, people notice things that can be fixed so they give suggestions to the company, EA Sports, or they just complain on social media. Either way, word gets around and the makers makes updates to improve the experience people receive.

Over the years, Madden has allowed for the fans to vote which player should be on the cover of the upcoming Madden video game(It used to be John Madden on every video game title, sometimes with players). Of course every fan has their different reason on who they vote and why, but main reasons are usually because of the season players had the season before. The following list is of every player who has made the cover.

  • Madden 01- Eddie George/ Tennessee Titans
  • Madden 02- Daunte Culpepper/ Minnesota Vikings
  • Madden 03- Marshall Faulk/ St. Louis Rams
  • Madden 04- Michael Vick/ Atlanta Falcons
  • Madden 05- Ray Lewis/ Baltimore Ravens
  • Madden 06- Donovan McNabb/ Philadelphia Eagles
  • Madden 07- Shaun Alexander/ Seattle Seahawks
  • Madden 08- Vince Young/ Tennessee Titans, Luis Castillo/ San Diego Chargers(spanish version)
  • Madden 09- Brett Favre/ Green Bay Packers/ New York Jets, Roberto Garza/ Chicago Bears(spanish version)
  • Madden 10- Troy Polamalu/ Pittsburgh Steelers and Larry Fitzgerald/ Arizona Cardinals
  • Madden 11- Drew Brees/ New Orleans Saints
  • Madden 12- Peyton Hillis/ Cleveland Browns
  • Madden 13- Calvin Johnson/ Detroit Lions
  • Madden 25 (in memory of its 25th anniversary)- Barry Sanders/ Detroit Lions (Xbox 360 and PS3 version), Adrian Peterson/ Minnesota Vikings (Xbox One and PS4 version)
  • Madden 15- Richard Sherman/ Seattle Seahawks
  • Madden 16- Odell Beckham Jr./ New York Giants
  • Madden 17- Rob Gronkowski/ New England Patriots

The latest version Madden 17, was rated 4 out of 5 stars by Metacritic, and 8.6 stars out of 10 stars by IGN.

Some of the updates EA Sports has made for Madden 17 (this year’s game), were huge for the online gameplay. There is now limited sprinting, one used to be able to sprint as much as they wanted, just a part of making it more realistic. Fumbles were easily gained for awhile, and wide receivers were ridiculously overpowered, making the defense seem as if it were invisible, were bugs that have all been patched up now. Excluding the bad connection every once in a while, the experience one receives is phenomenal.
