Introducing the First Coverboy!
November 8, 2016
Ever since the dawn of CoverGirl time their front page faces have been women, from classic Jennifer O’Neill in the early 1960’s to Katy Perry now. Just recently that has changed as CoverGirl has introduced their first CoverBoy, James Charles.
CoverGirl was first introduced in 1961 and many celebrities have chosen to represent the brand. All of these celebrities, however, were female. Throughout recent years, more and more men have been stepping forward to experiment with their interest in makeup, breaking stereotypical gender roles and normalizing men’s use of makeup.
One of these guys is James Charles, a seventeen year old from North Carolina. Charles began doing makeup when his friend asked him to do her makeup for a school dance. He agreed and soon after started exploring the world of makeup for himself. People began to express love for his makeup looks, which inspired him to create an Instagram a little over a year ago.
His Instagram exploded with likes and wonderful support which soon caught the eye of makeup brand CoverGirl. They eventually asked him to be the first male representative for their brand and he of course agreed, enthusiastically.
In an interview he had with Teen Vogue he was asked what it was like working with CoverGirl.
Charles exclaims, “They’re such an iconic brand so I think this partnership is truly historical. Everyone that I’ve met so far has been so kind and I cannot wait to work more with them in the future to create more amazing content!”
Although males wearing makeup has been frowned upon in the past, it is finally becoming normal as pioneers such as Jeffree Star and James Charles create a welcoming and supportive environment for their fans and males interested in makeup.
On being the first male spokesperson for CoverGirl, he shared, “It’s incredible. This has been the coolest experience of my life and I am so honored and thankful to be able to start this new era of CoverGirl! I hope to inspire others to be confident in their own skin and to love themselves with makeup or without.”
The first CoverGirl boy is truly iconic, will definitely erase some of the taboo around males wearing makeup, and without a doubt influence the industry. Congratulations, James!
