Calvin Johnson’s Retirement
February 26, 2016
Unfortunately for football fans around the world, Detroit Lions Wide Receiver, Calvin Johnson has announced he may retire from the Detroit Lions.
He has had a fantastic career and may go down as one of the best wide receivers in NFL history.
What makes Johnson dangerous is his combination of his speed and height. He has ran a forty yard dash of 4.35. Not many receivers possess the combination of great height and speed together.
He is a 6”5 239 pound receiver and coming out of college he was only 5”11.
Johnson has had a lot of notable achievements throughout his career.
First off, he is a six time pro bowler making the pro bowl in 2010 to 2015. He led the league in receiving yards in 2011 and 2012.
Johnson has made the 10,000 yard receiving club in 115 games making him the fastest player ever in NFL history to reach 10,000 yards. He broke Holt’s previous record of 116 games.
However, what most people know Johnson is that he broke the all time great Jerry Rice’s record with 1,964 receiving yards in 2012.
Johnson will go down as the best Wide Receiver in Lions history as he has had the most yards, receptions and touchdowns in their history.
As of now Johnson has 783 receptions,11,619 receiving yards and eighty-three receiving touchdowns in his career.
There’s no doubt everyone will miss Calvin Johnson as he is arguably the most exciting wide receiver in the NFL.
Some say Johnson also holds the greatest catch ever. Against the Bengals he caught a pass while he was guarded by three defenders all surrounding him, but not stopping him from making the catch.
If there was a Hail Mary and you had to pick one Wide Receiver in the league to catch it, most fans would say Calvin Johnson.
Lions fans now are probably shocked that they are losing the best player on their team next season and they will have to look in the 2016 NFL draft for a Wide Receiver.
Many players with a great career are retiring next season and that is sad for the sports world.
A lot of fans are questions why Calvin Johnson is retiring. Peyton Manning is age thirty-nine and he just won a Super Bowl so why can’t thirty year old Calvin possibly play nine more years?
Barry Sanders had commented on Calvin Johnson’s potential retirement by saying it “would be devastating”.
Fans probably won’t see a player like Calvin Johnson for the next decade.
Unfortunately for him, he has never won a SuperBowl and many fans wanted him too.
A lot of fans will thank Calvin Johnson, if he does end up retiring, for all the excitement he brings to the table.
Many receivers that will want to be in the NFL will look up to Johnson for sure because he had sure hands, blazing speed, and incredible strength.
What a legend Calvin Johnson Jr. was.
The NFL will definitely honor him and they will consider him a future hall of famer.
