Get ready, Disney fans, because the next couple of years you’ll be seeing see new Disney films that should have rival studios worrying.
The Disney/Pixar movie lineup for 2015-2017 will have theaters worldwide dominated by Disney. Here are a few of the new movies coming soon:
Toy Story 4: Woody and Buzz Light-year are back for more fun adventures in the Toy Story franchise’s upcoming film, Toy Story 4. While no official plot is known yet, it is set to be yet another great addition to the franchise. The first three Toy Story films racked in almost 2 billion dollars, along with extremely positive reviews. Rotten Tomatoes wrote that the Toy Story trilogy is the most critically acclaimed trilogy of all times. The success of it caused speculation and rumors about another Toy Story. In December of 2014, the speculation was over as the Walt Disney Company Chairman, Bob Iger, confirmed the new film, Toy Story 4. John Lasseter, Chief Creative Officer of Walt Disney and director/screenwriter for many other Disney films, will direct the film, which will be released on June 16th, 2017.
The Incredibles 2: Finally, everyone who wished for more of their favorite superhero family can be relieved. The Incredibles, which was written and directed by Brad Bird, will have a sequel that is to be released in the summer of 2016. Because of the $631.4 million the first Incredibles made, people were surprised that Disney/Pixar waited ten years for a sequel. The plot is said to be focused on the early adult lives of the younger Parr children, Violet and Dash.
Finding Dory: The world’s most beloved and forgetful fish is back in the sequel to the 2003 hit, Finding Nemo. Ellen DeGeneres will bring life to Dory once again as well as Albert Brooks, who is the voice of Marlin. Unlike Finding Nemo, where it was set in the ocean, Finding Dory will take place at the Marine Biology Institute in California. The long awaited movie will hit theaters on June 17th, 2017.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales: Everyone’s favorite pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, will be back once again. The first Pirates film, Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl, was well-received by both critics and audiences, but the following three films were not so well-received by either category. An official release from Disney presented the synopsis for the movie, which says that one unlucky Captain Jack Sparrow finds himself and every other pirate at sea being hunted by the terrifying Captain Salazar. He goes on a action-packed adventure to save himself and his fellow pirates. Set to be released in July of 2017, hopefully the 5th Pirate installment will live up to the glory the first film received.
The Jungle Book: Following the success of Maleficent, Disney has been trying out the remaking of films in live action. Cinderella, which was recently released in March of 2015, earned $70 million in its debut weekend alone. The Jungle Book, then, will be based off of the 1967 Disney film, which received many positive reviews. The new Jungle Book will be released on April 16th, 2016.
For some people, many of the upcoming Disney films are being anticipated with excitement. Pitman sophomore, Abbie Rodriguez, expressed her opinion on the new movies:
“I grew up watching Disney movies, so I can’t wait for these new ones to be out.”
Others, however, believe that the number of sequels and remakes of Disney movies are unoriginal.
“It seems like Disney writers are running out of ideas for new, original movies,” stated Pitman junior, Joshua Buck.
While it is true that Disney is on a sequel roll, it is up to the viewer to decide if the new movies live up to the glory many Disney productions have.
