YouTube is on the rise of popularity as its content increases along with its views. There are over millions of channels from around the globe, but which ones out of this abundant number are actually worth watching? It all depends; they have something for everyone, whether it is music, movies, comedy, gaming, and even educational films.
The best way to initially introduce someone to the heterogeneous nature of YouTube is through showing the most popular and highly acclaimed channels, but due to the wide diversity of genres out there, we’ll be giving a top five list for five popular categories that will be generalized for the moment due to extreme diversities; that gives 25 channels of unique content that can entertain an audience for days, along with a few freebies for similar channels to those on the list.
Gaming
1. PewDiePie
Pewdiepie is number one not only for gaming, but all of YouTube as well. He has been the number one YouTuber since 2013 and currently has over 33.7 million subscribers.
Felix Arvid Ulf Kjellberg, also simply known as PewDiePie, is admittedly considered as a mediocre player, but he holds his fame due to his sense of humor and absurd reactions to scary video games. The belief held by this commentator is that he prefers to share fun game moments with his “bros” (an endearing term he uses for his fans) instead of going through with traditional walkthroughs.
His videos often feature fellow famous YouTube stars such as Smosh, Cryotic, and his girlfriend CutiePieMarzia.
2. Markiplier/Cryotic/CinnamonToastKen/Uberhaxornova/The Sw1tcher
These individuals followed PewDiePie in the gameplay subculture of YouTube, and they each have their own unique personalities that make them admirable. They do have cleaner, less crude language in their films in comparison to PewDiePie, so they may be considered as more kid friendly. They’re also based more so on a walkthrough style than videos for comedic relief.
According to fellow Games Club member Samuel Kashiwase, a junior, the most seriously and in-depth gamer would be chuggaaconroy.
3. The Diamond Minecart
After the genre altering game Minecraft was released in 2011, YouTube channels were born solely to incorporate that single game. Minecraft is an open universe game about survival and building. The 3D, highly Pixelated quality game is now known for being the third best-selling video game of all time after Tetris and Wii Sports.
The Diamond Minecart is a channel devoting itself to Minecraft and Minecraft modded versions. If someone was new to the game or wanted building inspiration, YouTube channels are the greatest opportunity.
4. The Game Theorists
Along with everyone’s favorite games comes a little theory or two. The Game Theorists is a channel devoted to sharing these theories and providing them with firmer, and even scientific, proof. Their videos also tend to provide comedic moments that can be understood by devoted gamers everywhere.
5. Fast Facts/GameNewsOffficial/IGN News/Game Informer
Be for a game is even released, game news channels are often the best route for deciding which new upcoming games best suit an individual’s tastes. Whether its between the new Zelda game and the latest installment of the Sims franchise, these channels scoop up all the content they can to create moderate review and synopses.
Comedy
1. Smosh
Smosh is one of the most prominent channels on YouTube to date. Before PewDiePie, Smosh held the title as most subscribed channel on YouTube. They have several channels featuring comedy sketches, vlogs, and gaming. Their original channel Smosh is the primary comedy channel.
2. CollegeHumor/BuzzFeed
CollegeHumor.com is a college audience based site and isone of the largest comedy websites on the internet. Their expansion to fan included a sitcom, clothing designs, and a YouTube channel. Their content on their channel consists mostly on comedy sketches; some of their content is age restricted.
BuzzFeed is similar to College Humor in the aspect that they both are more known for their websites, though their site consists more of quizzes and a wider diversity of topics.
It should be noted that, while buzzFeed is a comedy oriented channel, they do extend their conversations to more serious topics at times.
3. Shane
Shane Dawson has a diverse career originating from his comedy based YouTube channel. He has the roles of a singer, comedian, vlogger, film director, and actor. His channels Shane, Shane Dawson TV, and Shane Dawson TV2 hold all of the comedic life content from his career to date.
4. Nigahiga/mychonny/Wassabi Productions
Asian comedians such as Nigahiga, mychonny, and Wastage Productions have a particular Essen to their comedy sketches that are meant to make the audience laugh at everyday life situations. Since Asian comedians and culture are such a large portion of the YouTube community, it is near impossible to make a decent list without at least mentioning them.
5. Steve Kardynal
Famous for his Songs In Real Life series, Steve Kardynal continued the theme of his channel to awkward lip syncing videos, some revolving around his dressing in female clothing and dancing in public while singing. Kardynal’s videos give more of a hate-me humor with his odd behavior some deem as inappropriate when in actuality, he is mimicking the original song artists.
Education
1. SciShow/Crash Course
Becoming an expert at a topic has never been so easy thanks to the guys who run both the SciShow and Crash Course channels. These guys manage to make learning both fast and fun.
Need a topic for an extra credit science project? Watching SciShow is the way to go for finding a topic that is, surprisingly, fun science.
Need a little review before the big history test? Crash Course teaches the basics of most historical periods Pitman High School’s history classes go over.
2. VSauce
Whether one is up to questioning all of existence or if cereal is a soup, the V Sauce channel has the answer to almost anything. The host’s curious sense of humor and witty knowledge helps drive the collected information and create a well-rounded theory for each question.
3. Good Mythical Morning
While the channel often features famous hues stars like Daniel Radcliffe or PewDiePie, Good Mythical Morning is a great channel to watch before going to school and prepare the mind for what is to come.
Most of their content can be seen as nonsensical, but they also post videos about interesting or unknown facts about a wide range of topics. It’s a nice and easy way to start off an otherwise harsh morning.
4. Big Think
Much like these other channels, Big Think is focused on progressive learning in the most basic form.
5. Sexplanation
This channel is dedicated to teaching its audience about “STDs, STDIs, safe sex, and sexuality,” explained Junior Sarah Reedy, a subscriber to the channel. Its content is not intended for immature audiences, but it gives informative explanations on topics some may not fully comprehend.
Music
1. VEVO
VERO is the biggest music channel of YouTube to date, featuring songs from popular artists. They feature music from people as famous as Rihanna to Pitbull. They are sure to have music from almost any genre, save a few international favorites.
2. HDMusicization/MrEpicOSTs
Musical scores, instrumentals, and OSTs make up a large portion of YouTube music. These two channels are renowned for their large variety of such music.
3. Bart Baker
Parody music met its right to fan on YouTube, and Baby Baker is one of the most famous parody artists on the net. He’s sure to make fun of almost every pop artist to date with their hit songs.
4. Epic Rap Battles of History
ERBH is a great way to watch people dress up as iconic figures and give an informative beat down on one another.
5. NateWantsToBattle
The culture of YouTube strongly emphasizes the vast amount of covers made by random channels. Some are beautiful singers; others may have to take a singing class.
Among these channels is NateWantsToBattle, a decent male cover artist who specifies in Disney and anime music. Of course, if he doesn’t have a cover for a particular song, there is always the ability to type in “[insert song title here] cover.”
School (top 4)
1. PDA-Pitman Daily Announcements
This is Pitman’s official YouTube channel run by the Video Arts class. It’s the number one channel to go to for school activity.
2. JakeFilms22
JakeFilms22 is a channel run by a student on Pitman’s campus, and his videos are often featured on the daily announcements.
3. Brett Nichols
Aside from Kapernick, senior Brett Nichols is Turlock’s only celebrity.
Rising to fame from the PDA’s video “Talent Rally Highlights 2014,” Brett became recognized across the globe due his perfect dance performance of Billie Jean by Michael Jackson. He now has his own channel where he performs along with other dancers to Michael Jackson’s music.
4. Khan Academy
While KhanAcademy can easily become #1 on the education list, it’s placed on this list for its relevance in actual class lessons. They also have a website; on both their site and their channel, KhanAcademy teaches the basics of any subject, and they give thorough yet easily understandable explanations for different kinds of math problems.
