At JonathanLawHigh School, 16 year old girl, Maren Sanchez had her throat slit by 16 year old Christopher Plaskon. Plaskon, whom had known Sanchez since 6th grade, had asked her to their high school prom; however when he was rejected, Plaskon stabbed and killed Sanchez.
The incident started due to a misunderstanding Plaskon had originally thought the rejection was unwanted because her boyfriend, Jarrod Butts, had already asked Sanchez to go with him.
Witnesses stated that Plaskon shoved Sanchez down the stairs and then soon after cut her throat with a kitchen knife. Sanchez had died because of wounds in her neck and chest.
Milford Detective Sgt. Douglas Youd claimed, “Plaskon was taken to the principal’s office at the school after the ‘altercation’ occurred at about 7:15 a.m. School Resource Officer James Kiely talked to Plaskon, whose hands and clothes were bloody, in the office. Kiely, who was aware that the altercation had taken place, asked Plaskon what happened, to which he responded, ‘I did it. Just arrest me.”
Plaskon willingly admitted to School Resource Officer James Kiely that he had committed this crime and requested to be taken into custody. Plaskon was charged with murder, and his case has now been moved to court, where he will be tried as an adult.
Investigators are still trying to determine whether or not Plaskon killed Sanchez for rejecting his request of going to prom. Friends of Sanchez had stated that she never dated Plaskon, they were just friends, and he was quite obsessed with her. The prom that had been scheduled for the later that night was postponed.
Vigils were held by the school for Sanchez where Jarrod Butts had brought her prom dress as a remembrance.
Friends and family of Sanchez were deeply hurt by this tragedy as well as the family of Plaskon. The Plaskon family replied, “Words can only fall short in conveying the depth and breadth of the raw sadness we are left with by this unimaginable tragedy. Our hearts are forever broken as we, like you, struggle to understand.”
Sanchez is now remembered by friends and family as a bright light burnt out too soon.
