An average high school student has been told that high school is “the best four years of your life.” So far, I have spent three out of four years trying to find some truth in that advice.
Between trying to keep grades up to satisfy both parents and colleges and attempting to have some excitement before I go insane; high school has so far been more on the stressful side rather than the “best four years of my life.”
The stress is a result from trying to be a successful student. But how can one be a successful student now-a-days.
Pay Attention
Yes, a teacher is paid to stand in front of a class to teach, but you are sitting in front of her for a reason. Take notes, ask questions, and get involved! When the teacher is lecturing the class –take notes. If you are lost, raise you’re hand! (If you are truly shy wait after class to ask your question; the teacher will appreciate your effort.)
Ask For Extra Help
If you are a little lost, ask for practice problems. Teachers and parents encourage students to ask for help! Teachers love to see a student interested in school; if you ask for extra practice worksheets, it will put a smile on your teachers face and an A on your paper.
Do the work!
You cannot be a successful student by copying or not turning work in. Copying does not have a positive outcome. What are you going to do in college –copy? I’d like to see one try. Do as much homework at school as you can so you do not have as much at home. It’s not fair, but that’s the consequence of being a successful student- earning your deserved grade.
Study!
Do not study the night before the test. Give yourself a few days in advance, this way you are motivated, ready, and alert in class, rather then studying while the teacher is teaching. Studying ahead of time is always a good idea in case something comes up the night before. Read the chapters, review class notes, even twist it up a little and study with a friend to stay motivated.
Paying attention leads to questions, questions lead to more knowledge; more knowledge leads to an A on the test and an A on the test leads to a smile on your face! Having good grades comes with many benefits. By maintaining a high GPA, you will have a better chance of receiving scholarships and getting into the college of your dreams. Try it!
