Born on May 6, 1985 in Forsyth County, North Carolina was a boy named Christopher “Chris” Paul who twenty-eight years later would become one of the best point guards to ever play the game of basketball. As of March 2, 2014, Chris Paul, also known as Cp3, is statistically the best active point guard in the NBA.
Paul has been put in the category of best point guards to ever play in NBA along with Ervin “Magic” Johnson, John Stockton, Nate “Tiny” Archibald, Isiah Thomas, and Allen Iverson.
Magic Johnson played thirteen seasons in the NBA and assisted 10,141 baskets. Chris Paul is in the midst of his ninth season and has 5,923 assists. John Stockton played nineteen seasons and holds the record for most assists and most steals. Stockton forced 3,265 averaging 3.3 steals a game. In Paul’s nine seasons, so far, he has stolen 1,434 balls.
In the 2005 NBA Draft, Paul was selected fourth overall by the New Orleans Hornets. In Paul’s first year in the NBA, he scored 1,258 points, averaging 16.1 points per game in the 2005 and 2006 NBA season. Even though Paul scored a lot of points, he is known as a “pass first” type point guard. In the 2008 and 2009 NBA season he had 925 assists.
In 2011 Chris Paul was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. There he and his power forward/center, Blake Griffin, became great teammates. Paul and Griffin had so many alley-oops, the Los Angeles Clippers were given the name “LobCity.”
“I think Chris Paul’s passing game surpasses his shooting ability. I think his ability to drive to the lane is impeccable, but I think Rajon Rondo is a better passer and Kyrie Irving will pass him as an overall point guard,” says Pitman Senior Trevor Chaney. The conversation for best point guard always change opinion wise, but statistics show that Chris Paul is the superior point guard in the NBA.
Chris Paul has been a seven time all star and in the 2013 all star game he was voted MVP. He was voted on the NBA all first team three times and the second team and third teams once. At his Alma Mater, WakeForest, the number three was retired in his honor.
By the time Chris Paul is finished with his career, he will have gone down in basketball history as one of the top ten point guards to ever play the game of basketball, and Paul will be a Hall of Famer without a doubt.
