Andrew Bolt, a twenty-one year old student attending the University of Purdue in West Lafayette, was shot and killed on Tuesday, January 21st. Twenty-three year old Cody Cousins was just taken into custody and is facing preliminary charges of murder. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf.
Andrew Bolt was killed in the school’s electrical engineering building. Supposedly the victim experienced stab wounds as well as bullet wounds. The police found a knife and several shell casings on the ground next to the victim.
Purdue officials sent out a text alert to inform students of the danger on campus shortly after the shooting was reported at 12:03 pm. The defendant, Cody Cousins, was taken in immediately after.
Another text was sent out shortly after saying that there was no longer an ongoing threat and that classes would be suspended through Wednesday, January 22nd.
The defendant, Cody Cousins, was also an engineering student at the school. The victim was attacked outside Room 067. Cody Cousins was sitting outside the building covered in blood, leading the police to believe he was involved in the occurrence.
As of right now, there is no supposed motive behind Cousin’s actions against the victim. It has been said that it may have stemmed from the fact that Cousins was listed as a teaching assistant as well as Bolt. They were both seniors in the school.
Cousins had a ten minute hearing at Tippecanoe County Jail in Lafayette. He seemed quiet as he was told that he may face sixty-five years in prison if he is convicted. The case has been set for trial April 22nd.
Bolt’s funeral has been scheduled for Tuesday in his home town, West Bend, Illinois.
