“Individuals of non-traditional orientation cannot feel like second-rate humans in this country because they are not discriminated against in any way.” Those were the words by Russian President Vladimir Putin when asked about the nation’s anti-gay laws.
In June 30th 2013 a series of Anti- Gay Laws were entered into force all which prohibits any kind of homosexual behavior or promotion of non-traditional relationship. Putin describes these laws as a way to make society safe for the children and not a form of discrimination. This law transcends to parents of other counties who wish to adopt from Russia, if their country has any kind of laws that allow same-sex marriage or behavior they will not be permitted to adopt.
People who are found not obeying to laws such as speaking out on LGBT issues are subject to fines and foreigners could face up to fifteen days in jail and deportation. Any demonstration of affection between people of the same gender such as kissing and holding hands can result in fines up to a thousand US dollars.
There were many rumors to the nation boycotting the Winter Olympics, but so far there has not been a great support by the athletes. For example, American figure skater Johnny Weir feels as though this is strictly a sporting event, one he has been working on for years and it is not the time and place to make it into a political event. Many celebrities such as Chris Pine, Kerry Washington, and Lady Gaga have been outspoken on their opposition to the Winter Olympics. Singer Lady Gaga revealed that she does not believe that US should not be participating because it would “just be wrong.”
In every Olympics, every participating nation chooses a delegate to represent the nation in the Olympic ceremonies; this is typically the political leader of the nation. The opening and closing ceremony will not feature the US President, Vice- President or the First Lady. This is not the first time the President does not appear in the Winter Olympics but it the first time that all three major leaders are absent in the Olympics.
The nation instead opted in selecting various athletes to represent the nation. Three of the US representatives include hockey player Caitlin Cahow, tennis player Billie Jean, and figure skater Brian Boitano who very recently came out; all who are openly gay.
When asked about the controversy on USA Today Cahow responded, “The White House is highlighting Americans who know what it means to have freedoms and liberties under the Constitution.”
They were selected under the premises of representing diversity and the determination of this nation. This has caused quite the stir taking into consideration the anti-gay laws in Russia and has many people many questioning if this was a wise decision. Many people are viewing the selection as a stance against the Anti-Gay laws without being direct and confrontation with it.
Other nations such as Germany, France, and Poland are also refusing to send their leaders to the Opening Ceremony. German President Joachim Gauuck explained that he would not be attending the ceremony because it the nation was attacking the human rights of its people.
Although the laws prohibit any homosexual behavior, Putin assured that visitors and participating athletes will not be prosecuted throughout the entirety of the event.
