Pitman HYLC, Hispanic Youth Leadership Council, is one of the campus’ most prominent clubs. It is a group of Pitman students that work together to improve themselves and their community. Accomplishing this through volunteer work and social events, Mr. Rosales, club adviser and photography/yearbook teacher, has many wonderful things to say about the club. One of them being, that it enriches cultural awareness, he exclaims “…cultural awareness is another one, to enrich knowledge of Latino and Hispanic history background…”
Speaking of HYLC’s purpose leader of the club, Felipe Laiton, 11th grader, the president of the acclaimed group comments that “The key purpose [to the club] is leadership development. Career awareness, [is another purpose] sometimes professionals come to our meetings and speak to the kids about careers.” As for the history of HYLC, it has been around for “about twenty-one years” and Pitman instituted its own chapter seven years ago. Rosales has been adviser for five of the seven years.
Leadership development and cultural awareness are not the only reasons as to join the club. Vivian Covarrubias elaborates “HYLC is a great opportunity to meet new friends and experience new things.” Having a well rounded atmosphere of fun and leadership development is one of the key characteristics of the group. HYLC is definitely more than meets the eye.
