The Boston Red Sox have not conquered a World Series title at FenwayPark since 1918. Boston had an outstanding 2013 regular season, which landed them a spot in the World Series next to the Saint Louis Cardinals.
The Red Sox definitely earned the chance to win the 2013 World Series title. They have put up a great deal of runs and also finished the 2013 season with the best record in the MLB.
Although their opponent in the 2013 World Series, the Saint Louis Cardinals are also stacked with great players, like Carlos Beltran and Michael Wacha.
Game one of the World Series took place on Wednesday at FenwayPark. The Red Sox had Jon Lester on the mound to face off the Cardinal’s, Adam Wainwright. All night Lester was the better pitcher, with his cutter breaking perfectly, and him throwing hard. Wainwright however was a different story. He allowed 6 hits, and 5 runs in a short five innings pitched. Along with great pitching the Red Sox had a supportive offense fueled by FenwayPark’s ecstatic cheers. Boston easily took game one in an 8-1 victory.
The Red Sox looked dead in game two, even with the home field advantage. The Cardinals had Wacha on the mound. He was making Red Sox batters “sit down” all night long. After game two the series was tied 1-1. The series was headed to St. Louis for game three, four, and five.
After a long fought battle, including blood, sweat, and tears game three ended in an obstruction call made by Jim Joyce, the home plate umpire. After the game loosing call, Red Sox fans were saying, “Jim Joyce is officially the worst umpire ever.” However, most Cardinals fans were agreeing with the call. This call, whether bad or not ended game three in a loss for the Red Sox, putting them behind 2-1 in the best of seven series.
With the Red Sox fed up with the call on Saturday night, they showed no mercy to the Cardinals on Sunday. They did not stop playing hard until the game was completed. Their great efforts won them game four. The series was now 2-2.
David Ortiz was on fire in all 6 games, batting over (.700), while other players were batting just (.197). The Cardinal’s efforts to stop the red hot Ortiz failed in Game five, along with all of the other games. “Ortiz is a huge part of this lineup, he is on fire this post season,” stated Red Sox manager, John Farrell.
The whole Boston lineup was a big part of game 5. The Red Sox came out on top in game 5, to take lead of the series 3-2.
For the sixth and final game of the World Series, Boston had the home field advantage. The Red Sox came into game six with great amounts of energy, and momentum after taking the lead of the series 3-2. This, along with David Ortiz’s hot bat and John Lackey’s arm overpowered Michael Wacha and his 98 mph fastballs. Not only was Ortiz a big help in game 6, even slumping Stephen Drew hit a solo homerun.
