When a woman is denied an abortion, she is being denied the right to control her own reproductive capacity. Denying abortion is directly correlated to forcing a woman to carry an unwanted pregnancy to term, abusing her physical as well as emotional well-being.
Pro-choice is not necessarily pro-abortion, it’s pro-freedom. Why should anyone, other than the woman herself, have control over someone’s reproductive system?
No one should ever be entitled to tell a woman what to do with her body and how to do it. Unless this person has personally been put in these shoes and this situation, they have no right to pass judgment, let alone ostracize and verbally abuse a woman who has taken her own life and body into her hands. She was born with her own organs and has the natural born right to do whatever she wants.
Situations like these require intense thought, time, and self-awareness. How is it acceptable to even consider judging someone for making a decision like this?
When a woman is deciding what to do with her body, as well as her unborn child, it should be blindingly obvious that she has put time and consideration into the decision.
Abortion is not an easy way out for being irresponsible. Not every woman who has chosen to have an abortion has been irresponsible with her body. Some have been assaulted, uneducated, or are in medical distress and cannot carry a child.
Stating that abortion is murder and should be illegalized is ignorant and insensitive to many women who have had no other choice.
According to Daily Mail, Savita Halappanavar, 31, was rushed to a hospital in the midst of a miscarriage. She was in intense pain and begged the doctors for a miscarriage, but due to the fact that abortion is illegal in Ireland, they simply replied, “This is a Catholic country.”
Refusing the abortion because the fetus still had a heartbeat, they stated there was nothing they could do and Halappanavar was forced to lie in suffering while waiting for the miscarriage to be complete. Later returning to the hospital, l she received an operation to remove the dead fetus, and less than a week later, she died of blood poisoning.
Her death was preventable and if she had received an abortion, she would still be alive. Having a mother and child die because ‘abortion is murder’ completely contradicts the term pro-life. Denying this woman an abortion directly resulted in her death and that is truly murder.
In Brazil, a 9 year old girl chose to have an abortion while pregnant with twins. According to Examiner.com, her pelvis was much too small to give birth to the twins. She opted to have an abortion to save herself.
Had abortion been illegal,l she would have died. Had it been up to anti-choice advocates, this child, who is a merely a baby herself, would have had to attempt to deliver these babies through an under developed pelvis. This would have severely injured herself and the babies, if not worse.
According to United States law, a fetus is not a person until it takes its first breath. According to many others, a fetus is a person at conception. In reality it is impossible to draw the line and state when life begins. This topic has been up for controversy since the dawn of time, and it is impossible to find an answer that everyone would agree upon.
The undisputable truth is that the mothers of these fetuses are people. These women are alive and breathing, undeniably full of life and the possibility of a remarkable future. These women are the ones suffering and dying because they are being denied an abortion, these lives are being taken due to strict anti-abortion laws.
Many believe that if abortions were illegalized that abortions would die along with them. The truth is that many of these women are going to get an abortion, whether the government allows it or not. The only difference is that instead of getting a safe abortion in a professional environment, these women are going to turn to other dangerous methods.
According to Our Bodies Ourselves, 219 deaths occur every day from unsafe abortions. 219 women worldwide are dying every single day because they are being denied to right to have an abortion and control their own bodies.
20 million abortions occur each year in countries where abortion is prohibited. Whether the government or anti-choice advocates condone it or not, women are going to have abortions. The real question is would you rather keep the mother safe, or would you rather her severely injure herself, or possibly die, along with the fetus?
If they were truly ‘pro-life’ they would care about every life, not just the unborn. Keeping these women safe is of utmost importance, but often it isn’t seen that way.
Abortions are seen as completely taboo, and these women are often made to feel as though they are monsters or murderers for taking their body into their own hands.
Instead of being treated with compassion and empathy after making possibly one of the hardest decisions of their lives, they are ostracized. When these women need the most support, they are made to feel utterly alone.
14 thousand abortions occur every year after a woman has been sexually assaulted. Carrying a fetus produced by rape is a reminder every day of the horrors these women have been through. These women are likely to develop serious mental illness and fall into horrible depression.
Denying them an abortion will only worsen their lives and continue the trauma.
In numerous cases, teenage girls are forced to give up their education, dreams, and any other hope for an independent future, because they are forced to carry an unwanted pregnancy that they aren’t ready to deal with.
Many girls don’t have a stable home life, and aren’t yet able to support another person. This will create a situation that is completely unhealthy to both the child and the mother.
One unalienable right is the right to your own body and life. By illegalizing abortion a woman’s right to her own body and life are being stripped away. The government should not be allowed to take control over a woman’s reproductive system and force her to take an unwanted pregnancy to term, no matter what the circumstances.
Sacrificing one life and future to bring another into the world should never be considered acceptable or legal.
At the end of the day it should be the woman’s choice whether or not she wants to carry a child. She alone should have control over her body and should never feel like a monster by others that will possibly never be put in that situation.
Ostracizing a woman for making possibly one of the hardest decisions of her life is becoming a common occurrence, and often the women who are making these decisions are harassed for it for the rest of their lives.
Pro-choice is directly equivalent to pro-freedom. A woman’s body is her own to control, and the government should not have a say in how she chooses to run it.
