On Friday the 20th Pitman High took the field against Oakland Tech. This was a crucial game for both teams in the sense that Oakland Tech was a drastic underdog, and Pitman was having their homecoming game. Pitman takes a lot of pride in homecoming week. Leading up to the game, the entire student body partakes in dress up days and lunch time activities.
“It’s amazing how many people participate in all the activities, I’m not a football player but it has to be encouraging, knowing that they have our support” said junior Charity Bearden.
“The entire football team is like a family, we just mix well together. Lots of us have grown up playing together and it helps having that kind of chemistry on the field,” claimed senior Justin Bradley (Center-Varsity).
This team is playing like they have little to lose and lots to gain. With the hard nose running style type of play Pitman has been known for these past 11 years. With Leaders on the line, behind center, and in the backfield, our high powered offense has been running up the score on everyone who lines up against us. Last years rally cry was “ROLL PRIDE!” this hasn’t stopped at all. We hear it every time the band plays and every time the Pitcrew is going crazy. Roll Pride is now a staple in Pitman’s legacy.
The game was close after the first quarter with a score of 21-14. Pitman looked confused and out of sync, but that didn’t last long at all. At the starts of the second quarter the Pride took off and never looked back, scoring 41 points and allowing 0.
With the game getting out of hand and a full crowd in attendance, it was time for the homecoming festivities to actually begin. At halftime, Zeke Zuniga was named Homecoming King, next to Bianca Ortega, his queen. It was a great halftime show full of Pitman’s outstanding cheer team, and Mr. Modesto’s perfectly orchestrated band. Comcast Sports net Bay Area was also in attendance to award Mr. Modesto with 20,000 dollars for being the 2013 All Star Teacher.
It was a great night for the Pride. Homecoming was a success and the Pride slaughtered Oakland Tech 62-20.
Coach Tyler said, “We went to basics and worked on all the little things. Our league is a good league, if we do that we will be ok.”
