The Sacramento Kings trace their roots to the beginning of the league itself. In 1949, the franchise was one of seventeen charter members of the new league that was created by the union of the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League.
Originally they were located inRochesterand were known as the Royals, but slowly found themselves to be the Cincinnati Royals, the Kansas City-Omaha Kings, the Kansas City Kings and finally when the franchise moved toSacramentoin 1985, they came to be known as the Sacramento Kings.
It has been a long road for the Kings. The franchise won championship in 1951, but now that has become a mild memory as they have tried to reclaim the title over the years. The Kings are struggling to stay afloat as they are falling short to win a championship title, with the lack of fans to claim vacant seats, and also the plans of building a new arena.
The Maloofs (current owners) are currently in negotiation with the multimillionaire Chris Hansen. Hansen is an enthusiast who wants to bring back the former glory of the Seattle Supersonics. Also the city has been looking to build a new stadium that has been delayed do to the waiting for the opportunity to buy a team and showcase it there. The city has a large fan base for its football team, the Seattle Seahawks and hopes to reunite the mass saddened fans from the loss of their former basketball team.
Seattle has become a place rich with NBA history has it awarded an NBA franchise on December 20, 1966 and served them for forty-one years until the year 2008, when the franchised was moved to Oklahoma City and were branded has the Thunder.
There is much speculation about the deal going through, some say that they have been sold for sure, but nothing have been released on the news. In 2008, it was believed that the Kings were moving toAnaheim, but after much refutes and also the potential compromise on a future arena, it was resolved that they were not moving.
Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is taking his fight to keep the Kings inCalifornia’s capital city to NBA owners. He has received approval from NBA Commissioner David Stern to present a counteroffer to the league from buyers who would keep the team inSacramento. He is trying to put forth a local investor to keep the team here, and one has stepped up, but the name has not been released. The potential move of the Kings toSeattleis on the mind of many fans and leaving many of them in suspense.
