If you were to watch the Pitman High school Varsity Football team play, you would soon notice that they have an extreme amount of endurance that is insanely hard to match and a significant amount of power. All of the team’s strength, endurance, power, and discipline are developed in the weight room at 6:30 in the morning, every day of the week. Their training is crucial for their success and because of it their regimen is specifically designed to focus on speed and power.
Their workout mainly consists of training and conditioning that develops the body’s power, speed, balance, and endurance and because of it, it requires a variety of different equipment and exercises. For the development of power, they utilize multiple full body exercises and lifts to create that explosive burst of power used in the midst of a football game. These power building exercises can range from full body lifts utilizing dumbbells or extremely heavy weight to swinging a heavy rope in every motion for a short yet intense amount of time. Whatever the exercise is, power based training focuses on generating an explosive burst of power from a motionless state.
Training to be fast is another key focus of training and conditioning. They achieve speed through one simple yet difficult method, training fast. The team is often told during training that you have to work fast to be fast. Because speed is a key element of their training, all exercises are executed with speed and intensity. Because everything is done with speed and power, the team will become very tired during workout.
To avoid complete exhaustion and build endurance, exercises are done in intense short burst sessions, followed by a short break which gives enough time to let the body gain its full strength back, letting it get back to work without being fatigued or sore. This method of training is very well tuned to work with the body’s heart-rate and muscle endurance, making it very “resource efficient” if you will.
The final key component of the teams training is balance. All the balance work helps a player develop strength on both sides of their body so that they do not rely on one side to compensate for the other. The exercises used for balance development are asymmetric and utilize both weights and body weight. Not only do these exercises focus on one side of the body, they also make the core kick in to compensate for the unused side.
In the end, the training that the athletes on the football team go through completely prepares them for any challenge they will meet on the football field as well as allowing them to execute their objectives with speed and efficiency for the entire game.
