The Pitman High School Winter Formal was held this year at the Larsa Hall on Saturday December 8, 2012 from nine o’clock to midnight. An estimated five hundred students attended this year’s Formal. Once ID’s were checked at the door, students were off to a magic candy wonderland. This year’s theme was Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, complete with golden tickets, candies, and colorful candy decorations. The DJ kept everyone on their feet with updated pop hits and green and blue disco balls that spun all night shadowing groovy patterns and lines. Food was plentiful with chocolate covered cookies and edible fruit and candy centerpiece on each table. There was a professional booth set up for pictures while Mr. Jack, the yearbook teacher, wandered around all night taking candid photos.
In addition, there was a coat check where many students chose to leave their jackets and many girls chose to leave their shoes. Most students chose to dance or stand in groups rather than sit at the tables provided. The style for girls this year seemed to be short colorful dresses, while most guys wore a dress shirt and tie along with a few tuxedos in the mix and some casual converse shoes. Boutonnieres and corsages appeared to be optional this year.
Being a freshman, this was my first high school dance experience and personally, I had a great night and can’t wait to go again next year. I thought the ASB group and an art class in charge of decorations did a commendable job and overall, most students had a great time. The general “feel” of the dance was relaxed and there were tons of people having a blast making memories. I doubt there was one person who sat all night and didn’t dance at all; everyone seemed to be having fun and that’s the point of the dance. If you have never been to Winter Formal or a school dance, this is one experience you don’t want to miss out on… I think it was a hit.
