Superhero movies have been dominating the box office and have become increasingly popular with over five different superhero movies that hit the big screen these past five years. These titles include Thor, Batman: The Dark Knight Rises, Avengers, Green Lantern, Captain America, and Iron Man. Of course they’ve always been popular. The idea of having those amazing powers and becoming something more than human is desirable to most. Take for example the character that is possibly the most cherished and celebrated of all heroes.
Superman. He’s smart, good-looking, and strong. Films have been made about this particular caped crusader, again and again. The most recent film about Superman that hit the box office was made six years ago. In between that time, several animated films have featured the red and blue Boy Scout. Apparently six years without Superman is too long though, Warner Bros. have decided to make yet another film about the earth raised Kryptonian, The Man of Steel, this film will differ from its 2006 counterpart in the fact that it will actually detail the origins of Superman.
“It’s a bird! It’s a plane! It’s Superman!” This phrase is iconic of the Superman franchise and it’s almost impossible to not have heard it. Over the years our favorite Kryptonian superhero has amassed an enormous amount of fans and has served not only as a superhero, but also as a normal everyday hero. His strong morals that were instilled within him by his Kansas upbringing made him a very idealistic hero. He has different sides that are in constant contrast within him.
As Kal-El, he is the last Kryptonian that serves a lonely future and carries a large burden. As Clark Kent, he is the clumsy, but chivalrous journalist. As Superman, he becomes the red and blue, dashing hero that citizens admire and villains curse. But who exactly will play the man of steel? Who has what it takes to be this super? Henry Cavill, that’s who. Seasoned actor Henry, has starred in many different films such as: The Immortals, The Count of Monte Cristo, The Cold Light of Day, and several others. Joining him within the film are Amy Adams, as Lois Lane; Laurence Fishburne, as Clark Kent’s boss; Kevin Costner, as Jonathon Kent; Diane Lane, as Martha Kent, and several other stars.
The film’s director is none other than Zack Snyder. Snyder has an impressive resume of successful films which include: 300, Watchmen, Sucker Punch, and Dawn of the Dead. The film is currently in the process of post-production and is expected to be released next year, summer of 2013. However, a teaser trailer has already been released. It is comprised of various scenes depicting Clark Kent’s transition into becoming Superman. There are two versions of the trailer; they only differ in the narration. One is narrated and by Jor-El, Clark’s biological and Kryptonian father. Within his narration, Jor-El is encouraging his son to lead, protect, and serve as a role model for mankind. He warns him that humans will stray from the path of the righteous, but with enough time and guidance, Superman will succeed. The other version is narrated by Clark’s human father, Jonathon Kent. Jonathon tells Clark that he bears a large responsibility and that his actions have the potential to change the world.
With a stellar cast and an acclaimed director, along with an estimated budget of $2.25 million, Man of Steel holds much promise. It comes out next year, but if you can’t wait and need something to satisfy the need for red and blue heroics, look up the trailers for the movie! Though short, the trailers are quite impressive themselves. It’s not a bird! It’s not a plane! It’s the new movie for Superman and it’s definitely something to look forward to seeing!
