At times it is hard to find a fellow teenager who will sit down and spend some of their oh-so-precious time and read about the one thing that never fails to produce a yawn- politics. However, since childhood I have held a fascination for politics and our government; my enrollment in the AP Government class here at Pitman High has only increased my interest in our country’s future. So as I sit here describing an event that could decide the future of the United States, I hang my head in sorrow because I am writing politics, and many of you would rather watch paint dry than read an article about politics.
The presidential debates: heated, controversial, angry arguments between the potential presidential candidate and the acting president. One has to wonder how these debates help make politics clear when most of it is wasted. Many believed that Romney won the first debate through his aggressive approach, and during the second debate both men used these forceful tactics to get their opinions across.
Obama took an offensive stance during this debate, the Democratic Party rallied behind him as he countered Romney’s accusations with his own. He defended the actions he took while he was president and challenged Romney’s policies and action plans claiming that Romney does not act in the best interest of the common people.
The first question was asked by a student who is graduating in 2014, he asked about his job prospects. Romney immediately assured him that when he is elected, college students will have a future which will be bright. Obama avoided major issues and focused on his plans for alternate energy plans.
Many were frustrated when Obama failed to completely answer the issues surrounding gas prices. When asked if a four dollar gallon of gas is “the new normal”, Obama did not directly comment on the question, instead he focused on environmentally friendly energy sources.
Disappointing or thrilling? The candidates did not provide comfort when it came to the major problems regarding our country, but one can never be sure of what they will do in office. Perhaps the next debate will assist people in their voting decision.
