Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Stephen Chbosky, The Perks of Being a Wallflower has high expectations, especially from book-worms who have set a high bar for the upcoming movie. As well as writing The Perks of Being a Wallflower, which has been the Young Adult Book for the past decade, Chbosky also directed the movie. Now in his late thirties, Chbosky was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize for the “Four Corners of Nowhere.” Some of his other well-know works include writing the screenplay of “Rent” and creating the TV series “Jericho”. Fans definitely were not disappointed by his adaptation of bringing the book to the big screen.
The well-casted crew of The Perks of Being a Wallflower includes 22 year old Emma Watson as Sam. In the past year, Watson has broadened her impressive body of work, proving her versatile abilities as an actress, instead of always being known as Hermione Granger from the “Harry Potter” series. Along with Watson, Ezra Miller and Logan Lerman also star in the film.
Nineteen year old Ezra Miller, who plays Patrick, is also known for also acting in “CityIsland” and “Afterschool”. Beverly Hills born and bred, Logan Lerman has quickly become one of Hollywood’s most in-demand young actors; known for both independent and mainstream films, Lerman has been in 3:10 to Yuma”, “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightening Thief”, “The Number 23”, and “The Butterfly Effect”.
Reel Film Reviewers said, “It’s clear…that Chbosky has, for the most part, done an absolutely note-perfect job of bringing this story to the big screen, with the movies subdued yet frequently heartbreaking atmosphere heightened by the efforts of the spectacularly well casted group of performers.” As well as Reel Film Editors, Gabrielle Bondi from Theyoungfolks.com claimed, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower is undoubtedly one of the best movies of the year and can also be considered one of the best teen dramas of the past year”.
As high school students, this film is very relatable and it is easy to connect with Charlie and his friends on many levels. This film appeals to a variety of viewers such as pre-teens just starting to experience in life, or people finished with their school years looking back on past experiences. Fans rave about how much significance this story has in their own life, and own experiences; and realize how much appreciation they had for the wallflowers in their own life after seeing this film.
Already out in theaters, “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” will surely by one to catch on the big screen.
