When you think of ice cream flavors, you most likely think of flavors like vanilla, chocolate, bubble gum, etc. However, you would be surprised to know that there are actually very unusual flavors of ice cream all across the globe, from flavors such as French toast to garlic to salad. These are only some of the weirdest and unique flavors of ice cream around.
In Japan, there is a flavor of ice cream that has probably never been known to us called raw horse meat. It’s a little bit of a shock and may seem a bit unappealing to people who have never tasted it or have never lived inJapan, but to the Japanese, raw horse meat is a delicacy. When it comes to food, their concepts differentiate from ours. So to them, it’s just another regular ice cream flavor just like vanilla is to us.
Raw horse meat ice cream may seem bad, but not as shocking as this next one. This next flavor requires anyone willing to try it to sign a waiver that says “what is painful going in may be painful upon exit”. This ice cream carries the name of “Cold Sweat” and is made out of the hottest chili peppers ever known to man. It is so spicy that their waiver says that no one over the age of thirty should even try to taste it and no one under the age of eighteen is allowed to taste it without legal guardian consent.
Another strange ice cream flavor is Foie Gras. Foie Gras is the liver of a duck or goose that has been fattened. The fatness comes from the forced feeding of the duck or goose by a tube. Humphry Slocombe, a creative ice cream parlor inSan Francisco, sells this ice cream as an ice cream sandwich with the ice cream between two gingersnap cookies. This flavor was created by ice cream maker, Philippe Faur, who also created other unique flavors like mustard, caviar, and black truffle.
Salted licorice ice cream is also a very strange ice cream flavor that can cause nausea from all the Ammonia that is in it. Salted licorice isn’t commonly known outside ofEurope. It may taste very salty, but there is absolutely no salt in it what so ever. The saltiness actually comes from the Ammonium Chloride. Salted licorice is often called “salmiakki”, the Finnish word for Ammonium Chloride.
Outside the world of commonly known ice cream flavors, there are the ones that are rarely eaten and could be painful while consuming them. If you go travelling around the world, who knows what other kind of ice cream flavors you will possibly find. You could probably discover some strange flavor that nobody has ever heard of because from the brief descriptions above, it is clear that food goes beyond the limits of what our minds come up with.
