Beginning last year, Disney brought a few of our favorite movies to the big screen in 3D. What is the purpose of this? To simply bring our all-time favorite childhood movies back to life. So far, my personal favorite, The Lion King has been released in theaters as well as Beauty and the Beast.
These classics are still so popular today because it has been shared from generation to generation, making not only our “young ones” but also adults look forward to the re-release of Disney movie classics. We are able to show the younger generation what was popular in our time, sharing our experiences while also reviving our childhood memories.
At first, the re-releases were not expected to gain many viewers, but it was a rather vague prediction which proved to be extremely wrong. However, the Lion King still ruled the box office after its release seventeen years ago in its re-release, beating movies such as Brad Pitt’s Moneyball or Taylor Lautner’s Abduction. With the successes of Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King, we should also look forward to many other movies being released throughout 2012 and 2013.
“Great stories and great characters are timeless, and at Disney, we’re fortunate to have a treasure trove of both,” said Alan Bergman, president of The Walt Disney Studios, in a press release. “We’re thrilled to give audiences of all ages the chance to experience these beloved tales in an exciting new way with 3D—and in the case of younger generations, for the first time on the big screen.”
Not only are Disney movies being re-released into movie theaters but are also being re-sold as new editions in stores. So far, we have witnessed Fox and the Hound, Mary Poppins, Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Peter Pan, Bambi, Oliver and Company, Lady and the Tramp, and Beauty and the Beast. It is also convenient to be able to buy these revised additions instead of watching them on the now-obsolete VHS.
Many perceive this exclusive news as Disney greedily trying to get more money out of the movies they have already made a very long time ago. Even though this may be true, we cannot resist watching the one-and-only, awe-inspiring, and incapable-of-being repeated Disney classics.
Other Disney classics s are expected to come back in theaters, such as Finding Nemo on September 14, 2012, Monster Inc. on January 18, 2013, and The Little Mermaid on September 13, 2013. The Little Mermaid, released in 1989, will be the oldest of the Disney classics to be released once again in theaters.
