Pitman basketball and other winter sports have come to an end recently. The basketball program came to a well-earned end when Varsity came just short of victory during an intense playoff game.
This year’s Varsity girls made Pitman history by being the first to get a CCC championship. The Varsity girls’ basketball banner will no longer be blank starting next year. Starters Morgan Renshaw, Parmeen Randhawa, Jackie Kuharski, Alex DeChari and Marissa Marable led the season this with help of freshman, Cady Riley, and the rest of the team.
This year’s Varsity team is made up of all seniors; not a single junior made the cut. Varsity boys fought their way to a playoffs matchup against Sheldon. Skyler Sexton led the team in three-pointers this season, which helped win pivotal points. Towards the end of the season, Varsity took part in a youth league basketball program and played the role as coach for their own individual teams for Turlock Youth Basketball League.
The JV boys’ team was very successful this year in competing for first place against Buhach Colony. Two players—Ryan Donnelly and Julian Carrera—were moved up to Varsity for the playoff game of the season.
JV girls had an excellent basketball season as well. The team also included freshman Mackenzay Hassett, Ines Bettencourt, and Stephanie Torres. The Freshman girls’ team, however, had a great record even after five of their best players were moved up. With a great coaching staff and determination, the team took many by surprise with the season’s turnout.
Although the Freshman boys’ team did not have an incredibly successful season, they are motivated to accomplish much more next season and fine-tune their skills. However, key players such as Nick Mattos and Ethan Stinson put on an impressive show this season, which can only bode well for next year.
