The girls’ varsity basketball team has had a bumpy start to its season, coming in fourth in its recent basketball tournament. But head coach, Keith Larsen and assistant coaches, Dave Walls and Kelly Cole have seen their team’s overall potential, and are excited to see what the team can do with it once they get more consistent with their plays and confidence on the court.
The team has four returning players: Marissa Marable, Alex De Chari, Morgan Renshaw, and Parmine Randhawa, who now play alongside five juniors and one freshman. Together, they have speed, knowledge of the game, and a few tricks up their sleeves that their opponents may never expect.
As the girls learn to work together, and continue to progress, Coach Larsen has high expectations for the girls. Coach Walls and Coach Cole are eager to contribute to the basketball program, and help infuse the players with their knowledge of the game, so that the girls’ team can reach its maximum potential.
Each day of the week, the team enters the gym with the short-term goal that they will accomplish something new that day, whether it’s a new drill or play. ”We are slowly building team chemistry and it should be a good year,” comments Marable.
The team has had a few rough games, but this has only increased their competitive attitudes on the court. They have become more comfortable with the plays, and are learning how to work together as a team, especially with the new teammates that have replaced the seniors who left last year.
“Even though the team last year was strong, I feel as though this team can go farther this year than last.” says Coach Larsen. In the meantime, they are going to continue to practice hard and motivate each other to excel. With these goals in mind, winning the CCC this year should be no problem.
Now the hard work begins. Their first league game is scheduled for January 3, and Pitman is excited to see what the three girls’ teams can do this season.
