Dinner for Schmucks is a comedy about a rising executive who thinks he has found the perfect guest to bring to his boss’s monthly dinner party when he meets IRS employee, Barry. The dinner party is described as being a “dinner for idiots”. This movie was released in America on July 30th of 2010, which they partly filmed inLong Beach,California. On its opening weekend, this movie made about $23 million dollars in box offices! From what I’ve seen, this movie is very popular amongst teenagers in general.
What I liked about this one-of-a-kind comedy film was that it had a lot of funny moments, but at the same time, it had its sentimental moments also. For example, when Barry (Steve Carell) had a flashback of his wife cheating on him, I felt a hint of sadness and empathy for Barry.
Another thing I liked about this movie was that all of the events in the movie blended in together very well. By this, I mean that in some movies, they jump from one thing all the way to another and it starts to not make sense which confuses some people while watching the film. However in Dinner for Schmucks, one event always led to another and they were always put together well, you could kind of get a sense of what’s happening and what’s going to happen.
I really liked this movie because firstly I love comedies, and secondly it had a lot of good actors whom I have seen before. The actors in this movie actually did know how to act comically when needed. That’s most likely because they have either been in a lot of comedy movies and have experience, or they have good coaching. Specifically some of the actors who I thought were quite exceptional were Zach Galifianakis (who played Therman), Steve Carell (who played Barry), and Lucy Punch (who played Darla).
Something that I think really made this movie stand out was its storyline. The storyline again, was based on the “dinner for idiots”. A couple of conflicts arise due to this “dinner for idiots”. For example, Julie (Stephanie Szostak) gets upset with Tim (Paul Rudd) because she thinks Tim is cheating on her with Darla and Barry gets mad at Tim because he overhears Tim say what a fool Barry is to Julie.
Dinner for Schmucks just puts you in a good mood with a couple laughs here and there. Overall, I think this movie was great for teenagers and adults of all ages and I would recommend this movie to anyone.
