WAVE Camp is a camp for kids and young adults with physical disabilities; it stands for “Water Adventures in Varied Environments”. There is a society up in Sacramento named Access Leisure, who puts this camp on which is held at CSU Sacramento for five days.
The sports at WAVE Camp are all about water, some include water skiing, canoeing, swimming and scuba diving. We go canoeing at Lake Natoma, water skiing at a private lake, and swimming and scuba diving at one of the CSUS campus swimming pools. There are two separate weeks for any person with a physical disability from the age of ten to the age of twenty-five. The first week of WAVE Camp is all for the younger population, and the second week is for the older residents. This camp has a wide variety of fun, from getting to know everyone to participating in summer sports.
The counselors that help us are greatly appreciated by the campers; they are comical, enjoyable, and welcoming. The staff members are fun to get to know and very much respected by the campers and counselors. They all have very big hearts for putting this camp on for physically challenged people. The counselors, staff, and campers get to know each other very well in the span of five days and some of these relationships last even longer.
We get to stay in the Sutter Hall dormitory and every room has two beds; it was fun to stay in an actual college dorm, even pulling pranks on the boy dorm rooms. In one of the pranks, we flipped and tore apart the beds, put string all over the room, put toilet paper on the string, and put some of their clothes on the string and toilet paper. The next day, the boys got us back by putting the same string in the hallway of the girls’ side, and put purses, clothes, stuffed animals, etc. on the string.
This camp gives kids and young adults an experience of a lifetime, being able to enjoy water sports that they normally wouldn’t have access to, especially the great counselors and the great laughs. From getting to know everyone, to contributing in adventurous sports, this camp has a wide-ranging assortment of fun!
