The classic Disney story of Beauty and the Beast was remade into the new and edgier Beastly. The movie is a Romantic drama and stars Alex Pettyfer who plays Kyle. Kyle is the popular guy who is gorgeous and knows it too. He thinks that because he is gorgeous he deserves everything until a witch changes his whole life. She turns him as ugly outside as he is inside and has to find someone to love in a year as “aggressively unattractive” outside as he is inside. Mary-Kate Olsen plays the witch. After Kyle messes with her character, Kendra, she gets upset and causes him to be ugly and he only has one year to find someone to love him like this. Vanessa Hudgens plays Lindy, the quiet sweet girl, she has a huge crush on Kyle; she sees things in him that no one can see. Once he is ugly he really notices her and how beautiful and sweet she is inside and out. Neil Patrick Harris is Kyle’s blind teacher. He was hilarious and he was like Kyle’s father because his father is never around. This movie takes place in New York City in modern times.
The movie starts out with Kyle trying to win votes for him to be the leader of an environmental event. However he insults a classmate Kendra who is a witch in disguise and he tries to apologize by inviting her to go with him to a dance. When he gets there he runs into Lindy (who he has gone to school 3+ years but talked to her for the first time the day before). He takes a picture with her and you can kind of tell by the way he is watching her he kind of likes her. Then Kendra comes in and Kyle makes a big deal about her being there and acts like a jerk and Kendra has enough and she casts a spell on him that will keep him hideous on the outside. If he finds someone in a year that loves him the curse will be removed but if no one loves him then he will have to stay like that forever.
Later in the movie he remembers Lindy and he follows her and starts to fall in love with her. One night he goes to watch her and he sees her going to a little store and he follows her but when she gets home her dad isn’t there. She runs into an alley and Kyle follows to find Lindy’s dad in a drug deal gone wrong. Lindy tries to help but it doesn’t work and Kyle tries to help but Lindy falls down the fire escape. Kyle goes and gets her but then he hears gun shots and he finds Lindy’s dad has shot one of the drug dealers. Kyle finally talks her dad into having Lindy stay with him where she will be safe. When Lindy gets to Kyle’s house she is so angry and doesn’t want anything to do with “Noah” (Kyle didn’t want her to know who he was).
Finally Kyle starts to talk to her and they become really close, he builds her a greenhouse and takes her to his lake house. When everything is going good Lindy gets a phone call that her dad overdosed and she has to leave. When she gets on the train she sees a letter that Kyle wrote to her about how he feels about her. Kyle sees her reading it from outside the train and gets nervous and upset because she just told him he was “a great friend.” She tries to call him when she gets home many times but he never answers. He finally goes to the school and he finds her and he hopes that she will understand everything he has gone through and how he feels.
The acting was okay, Neil Patrick Harris I think was the best actor in the whole thing. Every scene he was in was hilarious and very good. Alex Pettyfer however his acting seemed kind of cheesy but it was okay. Vanessa Hudgens did a good job and so did Mary-Kate Olsen who played a witch very well, she was crazy and out there. The makeup for Kyle was very good, it was gross really gross!
Overall the movie was very good. It started out a little slow but in the end it was a good movie. It is very entertaining and I loved the relationship between Kyle and Lindy, it seemed real. I recommend this to anyone as it was an amazing movie
